A new episode of explosive activity of the volcano is likely expected as the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) recorded a relatively strong explosion on 9 August at 05:38 local time. The last eruption occurred on 28 June.
A powerful explosion occurred from Minamidake summit crater that generated a white and brown-grey ash plume which rose 16,404 ft (5,000 m) above the summit and drifted northeast. The double-coloured ash plume is caused by the difference in the amount of volcanic ash.
Ashfall is reported in Kagoshima City, Aira City, Kirishima City, Yusui Town, Miyazaki Prefecture and parts of Kumamoto Prefecture.
Seismicity remained elevated including periods of amplitude tremor since 7 August. The seismic station records 76 volcano-tectonic earthquakes.
A batch of magma is rising inside the volcano's conduits.
The warning bulletin states that ballistic impacts of volcanic bombs and pyroclastic flows could affect an area of about 2 km distance from the main crater.
